Kerala Assembly Elections 2026: I have been a constant presence in Karunagapally for the past decade, says C.R. Mahesh

With the elections around the corner, C.R. Mahesh, the sitting MLA of Karunagapally, appears remarkably composed. Eschewing the frantic energy typical of pre-election campaigns, Mr. Mahesh likens his current state to that of a diligent student who has studied consistently throughout the year and is now ready to face the final exam with absolute confidence. He believes that his decade-long deep-rooted connection with every family and individual in the constituency has made his presence a natural part of their daily lives, rendering a special “election-only” campaign unnecessary.

He says for him, the distinction between his life and the lives of his constituents has blurred into a singular, shared existence. “Over the past 10 years, I have been able to interact so closely with every family and every individual in this constituency. I have become a fixture at local junctions and village paths. This consistent visibility has forged a bond that transcends party lines. I am a representative who rarely leaves the boundaries of Karunagapally, dedicating my time entirely to the people, save for essential organisational or cultural responsibilities,” he says.

Addressing the technicalities of governance, Mr. Mahesh offers a grounded perspective on election promises and manifestos. “Election manifestos are the prerogative of the government, not individual candidates,” he says. He defines the role of an MLA as a bridge—identifying needs, advocating for visionary projects, and pushing the administration to act.

According to Mr. Mahesh, while a representative suggests and follows up, the ultimate transformation of a region depends on the government’s vision and discretion.

Mr. Mahesh identifies the progress made on the Alappad sea wall as a defining milestone of his tenure. “It is impossible for any government to construct a sea wall from the southern tip to the northern end of the State. However, Alappad panchayat has now been included on the list of 10 most hazardous locations requiring urgent sea wall construction, similar to the situation in Chellanam. I express my gratitude to the government for this,” says Mr. Mahesh who adds that as a representative, he finds pride simply in accelerating these vital processes.

The MLA adds that his work is defined by a year-round commitment to his constituency. “As a representative, I believe our primary duty is to listen to the grievances of the poor and intervene in their problems. I have been able to do that consistently.”

He points out that true development is an inclusive, non-partisan journey towards making Karunagapally a model constituency. “While headlines often chase grand infrastructure and massive proclamations, I find the true essence of governance in the ‘small’ victories—a roof over a family’s head, a restored village road, or timely medical support for the ailing,” he says.
