The problem of plenty – The Hindu

When resources, comforts and choices cross a certain threshold, they begin to erode value, discipline and meaning.

The Telugu moral poet Baddena, in the Sumati Shatakam, offers a simple yet enduring insight: “Peruguta viruguta korake” — that which grows must eventually decline. For a long time, humanity struggled against scarcity. Today, paradoxically, we are confronted with the consequences of abundance.

The “problem of plenty” is not merely economic; it is civilisational. When resources, comforts and choices cross a certain threshold, they begin to erode value, discipline and meaning.

In economic life, excess supply often leads not to prosperity but to distortion. Markets flooded with goods diminish the perceived worth of what they offer, encouraging a culture of disposability. Food is wasted even as hunger persists; clothing piles up even as need remains unmet. Surplus does not automatically translate into equity. Instead, it frequently results in inefficiency, waste and cyclical instability. Prices collapse under excess and are later corrected, often artificially, reinforcing volatility rather than balance.

Abundance also reshapes the human body and mind in less visible ways. Physical comfort, when unchecked, reduces the necessity for effort, fostering sedentary habits and lifestyle diseases. Equally concerning is the impact on the mind. When gratification is instantaneous and constant, the capacity to derive joy from simple experiences diminishes. What was once a reward becomes routine; what was once sufficient feels inadequate.

The English poet Francis Quarles captured this paradox memorably: “He repents on thorns that sleep in beds of roses.” Ease without effort often breeds restlessness rather than contentment. A life stripped of challenge risks becoming a life stripped of purpose.

There is also the burden of choice. Modern abundance offers not just more goods, but more options than one can reasonably process. This surfeit often leads to indecision rather than freedom. The ability to choose, once a marker of autonomy, becomes a source of anxiety.

More importantly, excessive comfort weakens resilience. Just as a muscle requires resistance to grow, the human spirit depends on challenge to remain robust. When accustomed only to ease, individuals find themselves ill-prepared for adversity. The “beds of roses” do not eliminate the “thorns”; they merely delay the encounter.

The wisdom of both Indian and Western traditions converges on a single principle: moderation. Abundance, in itself, is not undesirable. It becomes problematic only when it is unexamined and unmanaged. The antidote lies in cultivating restraint — valuing quality over quantity, purpose over possession, and effort over ease.

In the end, the richness of life does not arise from having everything, but from appreciating enough.
