Indigenous actor Q’orianka Kilcher has filed a lawsuit against filmmaker James Cameron, alleging that her facial features were used without permission as the basis for Neytiri in Avatar.

According to the complaint filed in California federal court, Kilcher claims Cameron and several production companies, including The Walt Disney Company and Lightstorm Entertainment, used her likeness after seeing a photograph of her from The New World, in which she portrayed Pocahontas at the age of 14.
The lawsuit alleges that Cameron instructed his design team to model Neytiri’s appearance using Kilcher’s facial structure, which was later incorporated into sketches, digital scans and visual effects assets used throughout the Avatar franchise. Neytiri is portrayed onscreen by Zoe Saldaña.
“What Cameron did was not inspiration, it was extraction,” Kilcher’s attorney Arnold P. Peter said in a statement accompanying the lawsuit.
Kilcher further alleges she only became aware of the connection after a video interview featuring Cameron resurfaced online last year. In the clip, Cameron reportedly points to an early Neytiri sketch and says: “The actual source for this was a photo in the LA Times, a young actress named Q’orianka Kilcher. This is actually her … her lower face.”

The complaint also references a meeting between Cameron and Kilcher in 2010, during which the director allegedly gifted her a signed drawing of Neytiri alongside a note stating, “Your beauty was my early inspiration for Neytiri.”
Kilcher described the alleged use of her likeness as “deeply wrong,” arguing that her identity and Indigenous heritage were commercially exploited without consent. The lawsuit seeks damages, profit disgorgement and corrective public disclosure.
Released in 2009, Avatar became one of the highest-grossing films in history, spawning a multibillion-dollar franchise that continues with multiple sequels.
