A Catch-22 situation in Karnataka
The Karnataka Congress in the last fortnight has seen an intense debate on the status of Muslims in the party. This was sparked by the party’s decision to suspend three-time MLC (Member of Legislative Council) Abdul Jabbar from primary membership, and by the sacking of the Chief Minister’s political secretary Naseer Ahmed on charges of anti-party activities during the recent campaign for the Davanagere South bypoll.
This action has divided opinion within the party, with a section defending it as a necessary disciplinary measure, and another arguing that the “hasty” move could alienate the community, a significant bulwark of the party.
