Workhorse electric van fleet hits the 20 MILLION MILE mark


Workhorse and Motiv may not get headlines like the imaginary trucks from big T, but they’re doing the real work of electrification. Last week, the company’s commercial EV fleet crossed a major milestone logging their twenty millionth all-electric mile. (!)

The new Workhorse Group formed after the $105 million merger of Workhorse and Motiv Electric Trucks late last year did a lot more than combine R&D and sales efforts, they combined their respective fleets’ collective miles driven, too – and their cumulative total of more than twenty million miles driven is made even more impressive when you realize that these are mostly last-mile delivery vans!

“Twenty million miles is a significant threshold which reflects not only the quality and performance of our vehicles, but the trust that our many repeat customers have placed in Workhorse. This achievement reinforces the view that medium-duty is the sweet spot for electrification,” said Scott Griffith, CEO of Workhorse. “Every day our vehicles safely and reliably transport the goods, packages, and people that are the lifeblood of our economy, all with zero tailpipe emissions and pollution, helping to make life better for everyone along the route.”

The company reached that mark thanks to the efforts of some 1,100 commercial EVs, with the majority of those miles seemingly driven by the company’s W56 and EPIC4-based trucks, buses, and shuttles.

Clean Trucking‘s Jay Traugott adds that Workhorse has also gained plenty of operational data from its ownership and operation of Stables by Workhorse, an independent logistics provider for FedEx Ground. That company operates a mixed fleet of ICE- and battery-powered vans year-round in Ohio, and provides the company with real-world validation and operational insights into the performance of last-mile delivery trucks in everyday service.

Motiv (and, by extension, Workhorse Group) is one of those companies that I like to root for. They took a huge risk when they launched in 2009, and took an even bigger risk more recently when they decided to develop their own proprietary operator cab and chassis, the Argo. As much fun as all that is, though, it’s comments like these (below) that really make me hope Motiv continues to succeed – because they seem to get it.

Poor air quality caused by fossil-powered trucks disproportionally affects low-income communities and communities of color, as pollution is found in higher rates near highways, warehouses and ports, where these communities abound. Long-term exposure to poor air quality causes increased death rates attributed to cardiovascular diseases and has been linked to lung cancer.

Additionally, children who grow up in areas with high levels of pollution show reduced lung function, increased rates of asthma and lower IQ levels in their teens. Each electric mile our customers drive helps reduce these public health issues, for the benefit of everyone along the route.

MOTIVE ELECTRIC TRUCKS

When vehicle manufacturers start to look at the damage that ICEs have done, and continue to do their communities, and fess up to lasting, generational impact caused by the sort of lazy and/or corrupt government policies Americans have endured for decades, it’s hard not to think of them as, “the good guys.”

Here’s hoping that the good guys everywhere eventually win out.
