Vishvanath upsets World Champion Tashkenbay


Vishvanath Suresh upset reigning World Champion and top-seeded Sanzhar Tashkenbay of Kazakhstan 5-0 to enter the semifinals of the Asian boxing championships in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on Saturday (April 4, 2026).

A former World youth champion and the current National champion in 50kg, Vishvanath used his speed and ring craft to beat the Kazakh and set up a last-four clash with Jordanian Huthaifa Eshish.

Narender Berwal (90+kg) and Ankushita Boro (women’s 65kg) also recorded wins in their respective quarterfinal clashes to secure places in the semifinals and ensure medals for India.

Narender will take on China’s Asian Games and Worlds bronze medallist Bayikewuzi Danabieke.

Ankushita will next face Chinese Taipei’s Paris Olympics bronze medallist Nien-Chin Chen.

Men: 50kg: Visvanath Suresh bt Sanzhar Tashkenbay (Kaz) 5-0; 65kg: Abdulloh Madaminov (Uzb) bt Aditya Pratap Yadav 5-0; 90+kg: Narender Berwal bt Orkhan Aghayev (UAE) 5-0.

Women: 65kg: Ankushita Boro by Laura Yessenkeldi (Kaz) 4-1.
