The New Porsche Cayenne S Electric Undercuts The Top-Spec Turbo By $36,000

  • It still packs a punch, though, with 536 hp and a Push-to-pass function that adds another 121 hp for 10 seconds.

The Porsche Cayenne Electric hit reset on what an electric SUV could be when it debuted last year, and now there’s a new trim level that neatly rounds out the performance family hauler’s lineup.

The new Porsche Cayenne S Electric, unveiled today, slots perfectly between the base-spec Cayenne EV and the top-tier Cayenne Turbo (which doesn’t have a literal turbocharger). The S starts from $128,650 in the United States, making it $17,300 more expensive than the entry-level Cayenne Electric and a whopping $36,700 more affordable than the mental Cayenne Turbo Electric.

Despite the price differences, the Cayenne S gets the same 113-kilowatt-hour battery as its siblings, which can be DC fast-charged at up to 400 kilowatts for a 10-to-80% top-up in less than 16 minutes. The newly introduced S is the longest-range model in the lineup, with a WLTP-estimated 405 miles (653 kilometers) on a full charge, nearly 7 miles (11 km) more than the base model and 18 miles (30 km) more than the Cayenne Turbo. None of the electric Cayenne models has an EPA range rating yet.

As with the rest of the Cayenne Electric lineup–and other Volkswagen Group EVs– there’s a DC fast charging port on the driver’s side and an AC charging port on the passenger side.

The nominal output of the Cayenne S’s two electric motors is 536 horsepower (400 kW), but peak output goes up to 657 hp (490 kW) when Launch Control or the optional Push-to-Pass function is activated, enabling the electric SUV to sprint from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 155 mph (250 kph). That’s 0.9 seconds and 12 mph faster than the base Cayenne EV, but slower than the Cayenne Turbo by 1.2 seconds and 7 mph.

Visually, the new S gets different front and rear fascias and some accessories painted in Volcano Grey Metallic. Stateside, customers can choose from 13 colors and options such as Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), Active Ride Suspension, ceramic-composite brakes, and the Sport Chrono Package.

Standard equipment includes a Track mode, which keeps the high-voltage battery at the right temperature during hardcore driving. The funky, curved central OLED touchscreen is also part of the standard kit, along with the 14.25-inch digital instrument cluster. The optional 14.9-inch passenger display completes the dash screen bonanza.

The Porsche Cayenne S Electric starts from $128,650 (including destination) in the U.S., with the first deliveries making their way here by the end of summer.
