After its impressive run to the semifinals in the T20 World Cup in 2024, a lot was expected from Afghanistan in this year’s showpiece.
However, two defeats in the first two games set Rashid Khan & Co. back and their hopes of advancing out of the group stage took a beating.
“Overall, if you look, I feel we played some good cricket, especially the game against South Africa. A couple of super overs and you can’t really say things went wrong for us,” the Afghanistan skipper said ahead of the final league fixture against Canada at the MAC Stadium in Chennai.
Rashid highlighted the importance of winning the initial games in marquee events.
“The first two games were so important for us. I think the win against New Zealand in the last WC gave us momentum.”
He also said no team could be taken lightly and they had to beat the big teams to advance deep in any event.
Asked if the tournament could be the swansong for any of the players, Rashid said it was all about individual decisions.
About 40-year-old Mohammad Nabi, Rashid said, “he is still doing well for the team. He is still fielding on the boundary, running better than any other youngster in the team. And I feel like he still has some cricket left in him”.
