Now, the third Governor

The Karnataka Governor’s walkout from the State Assembly (Front page, January 23), can only be seen as an act of shirking duty.

A Governor’s role is to serve as a constitutional functionary, but this episode is another instance of the dangers of gubernatorial politicisation. That such problems arise with a troika of Governors, in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka — also non-BJP ruled States — shows that there needs to be deep introspection.

Governors, in the words of Pandit Thakur Das Bhargava, Member of Constituent Assembly, “… shall be a guide, philosopher and friend of the Ministry as well as the people in general… He will be a man above party and he will look at the Minister and government from a detached standpoint. He will be able to influence the Ministers and Members of the Legislature in such a manner that the administration will run smoothly.”

The ostensible reason for these worthies throwing tantrums is that they are only acting on the dictates of the dispensation at the Centre which mandates that they cause maximum discomfort and inconvenience to the State governments. Such events never occur in States ruled by the BJP or its allies.

The Governors of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are supposed to read out the address, through the legislature, as it reflects the vision and the aspirations of people’s elected government. It is time that the gubernatorial role is redefined to ensure the stature of the office.

Tension in Manipur

The killing of a 29-year-old man in Churachandpur district and the circulation of the video of his murder by the perpetrators points to a premeditated attempt to not just end innocent lives but to also cause disorder in the State. These criminals must not be allowed to succeed and the community at large must see through the motivations of such evil individuals.
