Mohit Suri Movies always had good amount of angst and intensity as he belongs to quintessential Mahesh Bhatt school of film making. Najayaz, Zakhm and many of those Mahesh Bhatt movies were something i loved to watch. Many of Mohit Suris movies have good moments; Had liked Yeh Lamhe, Kalyug, Zeher in some ways though never completely. Have almost always loved his music. Awarapan was his best movie so far, but it didn’t too well
With Saiyaara, Mohit has probably made his most complete movie. The movie is a lovely and poignant watch. Unlike other movies of his where there were some good moments within movie, here the entire movie is written well.
Sure, the movie is a throwback to the 90s romantic movies but considering we are surrounded by Akshay Kumar comedies and Telugu masala the movie is a great watch. Suri retains the intensity right throughout, no comedy etc. thrown for relief and stays focused and coherent. The intensity also does not spill over to the Kabir Singh and Vanga territory.
The songs are wonderful but also used very well. Mahesh Bhatt and Suri both tap into the Urdu Pakistani style of music so well. They manage to bring out pain and dard nicely. The buildup to the Saiyaara song in the climax is really clean writing.
The Ishq song is so good am not sure why it didn’t catch up more. Some really great lyrics too.
The leads are very good, and it is hard to make out they are debutants. Ahaan Pandey has a very good future.
Easily the best movie of the year by a distance even if the early portions of the second half dip a bit, it is hard not to feel for that bittersweet ending.
