Medellin, COLOMBIA—During his address to the United Nations General Assembly last month, Colombian President Gustavo Petro called for the prosecution of his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, over a series of airstrikes on civilian boats in international waters that have killed dozens of people.
He also railed against the U.S.-led “War on Drugs”—which he said has not only “failed” but come at a deep cost to Colombia, a country long torn by conflict linked to drug trafficking—as well as Trump’s immigration policies and his deployments of U.S. troops to quell domestic protests.
It was strong rhetoric, but Petro was just warming up. Shortly afterward, speaking to protesters at a pro-Palestinian demonstration in New York, Petro proposed a global armed force to liberate Palestine. “I ask all the soldiers of the army of the United States not to point their guns at people. Disobey the orders of Trump. Obey the orders of humanity,” he said.
