Edwards seeks more opportunities against Test-playing nations

Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards inadvertently summed up the dilemma surrounding the growth of ICC Associate members ahead of his team’s T20 World Cup clash against India here on Wednesday.

He agreed that the Associates needed to ‘play better’ and ‘win more games’ at World Cups, which could eventually open up opportunities. Meanwhile, he also argued: “I think, to get to the next level, a lot of it comes down to more opportunities against Test-playing nations.”

Playing opportunities for Associate nations against full members are few and far between. Since the ODI World Cup in 2023, the Dutch have played just three matches against full members across formats outside ICC tournaments. It is unfair to expect the have-nots to level up at global events. Despite the challenges, the Associates have fought hard in this World Cup, with Nepal, Italy, the USA and the Dutch giving the established teams a run for their money.

Running defending champion India close at the colossal Narendra Modi Stadium could be a giant leap for Edwards’ team.

“To be playing against India in India at the biggest stadium is something all the guys are really looking forward to. It’s a great opportunity to test yourselves against the best,” the Dutchman said.
