Creating a community culture: Smash 24 now open at Uptown @ Kathipara

With the growing popularity of paddle based sports, Chennai is witnessing a surge in pickleball and padel courts. While many are open until late in the night, this one stays open 24×7.

Smash 24 has introduced a community space at Uptown @ Kathipara, Urban Square. Open to all ages, the venue offers professional sporting facilities such as pickleball courts and a padel court along with co-working spaces that provide workstations, conference rooms and meeting pods, and foot spa resources. 

Chennai is seeing a rise in more experiential areas with game centres and courts that allow communities to come together. It focusses on building shared spaces that allow for athletes, children, professionals, sports enthusiasts and beginners alike to connect, learn, and hang out.

“The idea is to build a creative space that would bring different communities together. It is for both athletes and regular people who like to relax,” said Charan Reddy, director, BNR Infrastructure Projects.

Venues that offer immersive experiences and extended hours are increasingly drawing in crowds. “I love that its located at the heart of the city. The fact that its open all night is a great bonus” said Prithivee Rajesh, a singer/influencer.

With the rising popularity of pickleball and similar sports, the new players are reshaping not just the game, but the culture around it, bringing elevated athleisure into the spotlight. Players are embracing trending looks that blur the line between performance and everyday fashion. It is no longer about wearing something that is just sports friendly, but also about curating outfits that are. “This is a positive trend that has come into the limelight because youngsters are going out and playing pickleball, so there is going to be a demand for more athleisure,” said Chaitanya Rao, a Chennai- based designer.

“I have always been into sport. I think the grounds are spacious and airy. For me it’s a way to have fun as well as stay fit. This is a great space for families and kids to have a good time as there’s something for everyone,” said Jaeden Mathew, a 14 year old pro pickleball player.

With entertainment offerings like game zones and a diverse mix of restaurants, Uptown @ Kathipara continues to evolve as a vibrant hub, drawing in people from across communities and creating a more inclusive social space.
