Chronic pancreatitis among children cause for concern, say doctors at Gurugram hospital

About 200 children were diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis in the past year, doctors at Fortis Hospital, Gurugram, have noted, terming it a “cause for concern” as it is usually associated with adults and alcohol intake.

“When diseases once associated with adults begin appearing in children, it becomes a serious concern. Timely intervention is critical to protect growth, nutrition and long-term health, while minimally invasive surgery can significantly improve recovery and quality of life,” Yash Rawat, facility director and senior vice president, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram, said.

Some doctors said detection of such cases has improved. “Children now have conditions once believed to be almost exclusive to adults. The reasons include genetics, improved detection, and evolving disease biology,” Dr. (Prof.) Amit Javed, gastrointestinal surgeon, Fortis Hospital, Gurugram, said.

Other possible reasons could include congenital duct abnormalities, autoimmune pancreatic inflammation, metabolic disorders. Doctors said parents should look for symptoms such as recurrent abdominal pain, vomiting without infection, unexplained weight loss, poor height or weight gain, weakness and fatigue, and early signs of diabetes.
