When Tiruchi MP Durai Vaiko visited two small villages located in close proximity in a remote region of Madurai district on Friday, children and women gathered in large numbers and accorded a rousing reception to him in traditional style and thanked him for his efforts to revive a primary school there.

About three years back, the residents of Chettikulam and Perumalpatti in Karadikal panchayat union near Tirumangalam in Madurai district made a representation to Mr. Durai Vaiko.

They said the primary school run by the government at a place situated in between the village had to be closed as the building was in a dilapidated condition. Though the authorities had announced an alternative, the parents and the villagers were hesitant to send their wards since they had to go at least three to four kilometres more to reach the school.

Unable to provide even primary education to their children, the villagers appealed to Mr. Durai Vaiko for help. After visiting the habitations and the damaged building, the MP took it up with School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi.

After sustained follow-up with the government, officials issued an order to revive the school in the same area in the larger interest of the children. Also, the Minister directed the authorities to find a suitable land and build classrooms with basic infrastructure facilities.

A few months back, as a makeshift arrangement, a building was identified. It belonged to MDMK functionary Nalliah. With the consent of the School Education Department officials, the classes were started there and the children turned up in good numbers.

The MP told The Hindu that he was immensely satisfied over the efforts, small though. “Giving education to the children was the biggest asset. The parents are happy that the school has been restored and classes go on without any hindrance,” he added.

Thanking Mr. Anbil Mahesh Moyyamozhi, the MP also extended his appreciation to the School Education Department officials. A site measuring 20 cents had been identified, and a building would soon be constructed on 10 cents, Mr. Durai Vaiko said.
