GVMC expedites works of working women hostels across Visakhapatnam
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has stepped up efforts to expedite the construction of three working women’s hostels across the city. The corporation aims to complete 50% of the works by the end of March this year.
Of the three proposed facilities, construction is progressing steadily at Mudasarlova and Gajuwaka, while the foundation stone for the third hostel was recently laid at Madhurawada. The ₹172 cr worth project is being funded by the Central Government under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme and is being executed by the GVMC under the Smart City Corporation works.
With Visakhapatnam witnessing rapid industrial and economic growth, particularly in sectors such as pharma, healthcare, education, real estate, marketing, and information technology, the demand for safe and affordable accommodation for working women is expected to rise significantly in the coming years. Anticipating increased employment opportunities and migration to the city, GVMC officials are keen on completing the hostels at the earliest to provide secure and convenient housing options.
Although the project received administrative sanction during the financial year 2024–25, the finalisation of land parcels and preliminary formalities caused some delay. The foundation stone for the Gajuwaka working women’s hostel was laid in November 2025, followed by Mudasarlova in December 2025. The Madhurawada hostel was grounded a few days ago by Bheemunipatnam MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao and other officials.
GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg said that the construction work at the Gajuwaka and Mudasarlova sites is progressing at a good pace, with approximately 15% work completed so far. He stated that the civic body has set a target to achieve 50% completion of all three hostels by the end of March. To meet the deadline, additional manpower and machinery will be deployed to accelerate the pace of construction, he added.
