Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Sunday inaugurated a new bus stand built at a cost of ₹20 crore in Pattukkottai in Thanjavur district and flagged off bus services from the facility.

Constructed on 6.5 acres at Nariyampalayam, the upgraded ‘A’ class bus stand has been developed to ease traffic congestion in the town, where the existing bus stand in the central area had been operating with limited capacity. Pattukkottai municipality, which has 33 wards and a population of over 73,000 as per the 2011 Census, has witnessed increasing vehicular movement in recent years, necessitating improved infrastructure.

The new facility can accommodate up to 50 buses and includes 120 shops, two eateries, drinking water facilities, parking spaces for two-wheelers and four-wheelers, a luggage room, reservation counter, three passenger waiting halls and toilet facilities at multiple locations.

Mr. Udhayanidhi said the bus stand had been planned keeping in mind the town’s future growth and the need for modern transport infrastructure. He said development work had been undertaken in Pattukkottai, including laying of about 35 km of roads, renovation of waterbodies at a cost of ₹7.5 crore, solid waste management work worth ₹5 crore, a sewage treatment plant project estimated at ₹22 crore, improvements to school infrastructure and the establishment of a knowledge centre.

He urged the residents to make good use of the new bus stand and cooperate with the municipality in maintaining cleanliness and upkeep of the facility.

Ministers K.N. Nehru, Govi Chezhiaan, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, Siva V. Meyyanathan and T.R.B. Rajaa, Members of Parliament, MLAs, district officials. and local body representatives were present.
