RANJI TROPHY | Karnataka takes the upper hand after batting debacle by Mumbai
Mumbai opted to bat, hoping to make optimum use of home conditions. But a batting debacle and some disciplined bowling by Karnataka led to the 42-time champion folding up for a paltry 120 in their Ranji Trophy quarterfinal here.
As Venkatesh Prasad, the Karnataka State Cricket Association president, watched the proceedings at the MCA-BKC ground on Friday, the seasoned Mayank Agarwal ensured that the team ended the day at 110 for two.
Mayank Agarwal (54 batting, 81b, 8×4, 1×6) and K.L. Rahul added 50 for the opening wicket. Both looked to capitalise on the start before Rahul was caught at covers by Tanush Kotian off a Mohit Avasthi delivery.
Things slowed down thereafter as captain Devdutt Padikkal couldn’t extend his stay beyond 27 balls, caught behind off Suryansh Shedge.
However, with Karun Nair surviving a review, there were no further slip-ups.

None of the Mumbai batters, barring Akhil Herwadkar (60, 138b, 9×4), showed resilience on a surface that had a tinge of green and offered uneven bounce.
With Sarfaraz Khan ruled out due to a viral fever, Mumbai’s batting was heavily reliant on Yashasvi Jaiswal and Siddhesh Lad. But when it mattered the most, none delivered.
While Jaiswal looked edgy before being caught behind off a moving Vidyadhar Patil delivery, Vidwath Kaverappa tightened the noose further by dismissing Musheer Khan and Lad in quick succession. As the Karnataka fast bowlers breathed fire, a jittery Musheer offered a regulation catch to Rahul at first slip.
Herwadkar, who batted for 255 minutes, made most of a reprieve to bring up his second fifty of the season, and aimed to rebuild with Shedge, before the latter was caught behind off Prasidh Krishna.
Prasidh came close to a hat-trick, dismissing Akash Anand and Shams Mulani off successive deliveries. However, his fiery spell put Mumbai on the mat.
